What's the Deal with SEO and How Does It Actually Work?

January 19, 2026

Every single day, billions of searches are done on engines like Google - and for businesses that's a make-or-break situation. Showing up on the first page of search results can be what keeps them in the game. For many business owners, though, the whole system remains a complete mystery. And that's where Search Engine Optimization or SEO for short - comes in.

This article is going to break down SEO so you can finally get the lowdown on this often misunderstood topic. We'll define what SEO is, show how search engines work, and give you the inside scoop on what makes a successful strategy tick. By understanding these basic principles, businesses can start implementing some core strategies that'll help boost their online presence, drive relevant traffic, and hit their digital marketing goals.

What is SEO? A Definition in Plain English

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is basically the practice of optimizing your website or web page to bring in more and better traffic from a search engine's organic results. Now, unlike paid search ads where you just buy visibility, organic traffic is earned through doing SEO the right way and building up your authority.

To get a really good handle on this definition, let's break it down:

  • Quality of Traffic: You can get all the visitors in the world, but if they're coming to your site because Google says you sell Apples when you actually sell apples - that's not quality traffic. You want people who are genuinely interested in what you're selling.

  • Quantity of Traffic: Once you get the right people clicking through from search engine results pages (SERPs), more traffic is always better.

  • Organic Results: Paid ads make up a big chunk of many SERPs. Organic traffic is the kind you don't have to pay for.

SEO is not something you do once and then forget about - it's a long-term game that requires continuous effort to keep your rankings up as search engine algorithms change and your competitors adjust their strategies.

How Search Engines Work: A Simplified Guide

Search engines like Google have these complex processes in place to discover, understand and organize online content. They're trying to give you the most relevant and authoritative results for any search you make. Here's how it works in a nutshell: crawling, indexing, and ranking.

Crawling

First off, search engines send out a bunch of robots (known as crawlers or spiders) to find new and updated content. This content can be anything from a web page to an image, a video or a PDF - whatever it is, it gets discovered by a link.

Googlebot starts by fetching a few web pages, then follows the links on those pages to find new URLs. By following this path of links, the crawler finds new content and adds it to their massive database called the Google Index, known as Caffeine.

Indexing

Once a page gets discovered, the search engine tries to figure out what it's about. This is called indexing. The search engine looks at the content of the page, catalogues images and video files, and tries to make sense of the page. All this info gets stored in the Google Index - their massive database of all the content they deem worthy of serving to searchers.

Ranking

When someone searches for something, the search engine digs through its index for the most relevant content and then orders it in the hopes of answering the searcher's query. This ordering of search results by relevance is called ranking. In general, the higher a website is ranked, the more relevant the search engine thinks that site is to the search query.

Search engines use algorithms to decide on ranking, taking into account hundreds of factors like what keywords you're searching for, how relevant and user-friendly a page is, how expert the source is, and your location and preferences.

On-Page vs Off-Page SEO: The Two Sides of Optimization

A successful SEO strategy is made up of two main parts: on-page SEO (optimizing your own website) and off-page SEO (actions taken outside of your website).

On-Page SEO

On-page SEO is all about optimizing individual web pages to rank higher in search engines and get more relevant traffic. This means optimizing both the content and the HTML source code of a page.

Some key elements of on-page SEO include:

  • Keyword Research: Identifying the terms your potential customers are searching for and layering them into your content in a way that feels natural.

  • Title Tags and Meta Descriptions: Crafting snazzy title tags and descriptions that show up in search results to get people to click.

  • Header Tags (H1, H2, etc.): Using headers to structure your content in a way that's easy for both users and search engines to understand.

  • High-Quality Content: Creating original, valuable content that actually answers the user's search question.

  • Internal Linking: Linking to other relevant pages on your website to help search engines understand the structure of your site and share the value.

  • Image Optimization: Think of it like this: using descriptive file names and alt text for images is like labelling them in a way that search engines can "read" so they can start to understand what the images are about.

Off-Page SEO - It's About What Other People Say About You

You know how it is with word of mouth - people tend to trust opinions from others, right? Off-page SEO is pretty much the same thing. It's about what people are saying about you online and - more importantly - what other websites are linking to you.

The main thing search engines pay attention to is backlinks: links from one website to another. And if a lot of reputable sites are linking to your stuff, search engines get the idea that your content is pretty valuable and authoritative.

Other things that come into play with off-page SEO include:

  • Brand Mentions: Even if people are just mentioning your brand name without actually linking to it - that can still send a signal to search engines that you're a big deal.

  • Social Media Signals: Having a lot of social media shares is not a direct ranking factor, but it makes your content more visible and can encourage people to link to it.

  • Local SEO: Managing your Google Business Profile and getting listed in local directories.

Technical SEO - Getting Your House in Order

Some people consider technical SEO to be a part of on-page SEO, but it's really a whole different ball game. It's all about getting your website and server in order so that search engine spiders can crawl and index it properly.

Whereas on-page SEO is all about tweaking your content to get better results, technical SEO is more about making sure the underpinnings of your site are solid. Key things to look at include:

  • Site Speed: This one's a no-brainer - your pages need to load fast, or people will give up on you.

  • Mobile-Friendliness: Your site needs to be optimised for mobile devices because that's where most people are accessing the internet these days.

  • Site Architecture: Your pages need to be laid out in a logical way, so search engines and users can find what they're looking for.

  • XML Sitemaps: Think of this like a map that shows search engines where all the different bits of your site are.

  • Security (HTTPS): You need to be using a secure connection - otherwise you might as well be handing over your visitors' personal details to anyone who comes along.
